0. Back story

February 2019.

So, (some people believe you should never begin a sentence with a conjunction but they are wrong) we wanted to go to Pakistan for a few months and thought it’d be fun to travel by car instead of just grabbing the first possible flight out of Frankfurt. The very first thing to check was if there was even a road connection that was

a) open,

b) we had the necessary paperwork for it.

Turns out, it was very much open and some people had already done similar journeys in the past so there was absolutely nothing to worry about.

Our noble steed, a 2011, factory spec mini cooper, photographed here on the 31st of March 2019 in Germany as we set off on our trip. Most people doubted it was a reasonable car for the trip and advised us against it. For us, this was the only option as there was no time to find a suitable car with the budget we had and the time left to make all the arrangements. I’ve had this car for 6+ years now and know that all the service and maintenance work has been done. Once I had it checked for any outstanding work, it was good to go.

Paperwork needed: Passports (dah!), Visas, Carnet de Passage (passport for the car), car and travel insurance. All of these proved pretty straight forward to secure as long as the tedious processes and paperwork was adhered to.

Worked out the route we would be driving. We didnt make any hotel reservations as we were going to decide it all as we went along our way. We had the advantage of travelling in the off season (April) where tourist activity was at the minimum along our way.

Made a list of all the things we wanted to pack for the trip, keeping in mind we’d be taking along a lot of stuff that we’d need in Pakistan for the duration of our stay as well, this proved the trickiest of all the tasks.

This blog is an account of this trip and I’ll be updating it in the coming days with pictures and locations where we made stops along the way.
